Three weeks ago, Louie tripped and fell and just couldn't get up. Being one of the heavyweights in geese I knew it could be serious. Their legs just cannot deal with the body size and are the first to go. I put him in an enclosure on the lawn so that all his friends could be close to him but I realized that not being able to even stand, he couldn't really do all the activities that made him a goose....bathing, preening and grazing. The vet assured me that the condition would only worsen and putting him down was only a question of when not if. I adopted Louie and Mo when they were ten months old and they both have had a good ten years here. It is with a sad heart that I let him go but I know he is whole again and frolicking with all my geese that preceded him. Farewell dear friend.

Good by, Louie, you were greatly loved. I'm sorry for your loss, Carol. It's so hard to make that decision for them.

Thanks for the thoughts CM, looks like we're the only ones around...sure not like the old days. I recently saw in the Poultry Press where Steve Jones from Poetry Tx., who used to share posts here many moons ago, is now a licensed poultry judge. He still exhibits and wins with his prized poultry.

Louie's brother Mo calls for him starting early in the AM and walks around the place checking out all the possible spots where he might find him. If only he could understand.

Hope all is well with the birds...So. Calif. has had foggy, cool weather and just this week is experiencing more summer-like temps. The birds have enjoyed the nice weather while they endure their molts.

Yes, Carol, I think everyone has moved to facebook or other groups over time. I see Ron, Mary, and Kim on facebook from time to time.

The picture of Louie is so impressive - they are such large, serious looking fellas. How sad for Mo. That is always the very hardest part - those left behind who look and look for their friends.

I met Steve Jones (remember he went by Hummer?) at the Shawnee OK poultry show one year and I do see him each year working there. It's such an interesting poultry show - all kinds of chickens, ducks, geese, even turkeys and they do the pigeon show at the same place the same weekend.

You are so right though about life quality though and that is much more important than the number of years for these guys. Thinking of you and hope you are doing well. And FYI: I can't stand Facebook!

I'm sending you my thoughts and hope you are doing okay. It is just so hard to not have our feathered babies with us anymore. I can so relate to your heart ache.

Please know I'm thinking of you,

With warm condolences,

Linda

ChickMoM

Try searching again. I changed my settings on FB. What is your email address for FB and I'll try searching for you. The link you gave me didn't work.

We'll get there. LOL

My email for facebook is chickmom@gmail.com.

Each time I respond in this thread, I am just in awe of the regal and handsome Louie. It's a great picture and he looks so in-charge but calm.
